Community Alliance in Waste Reduction and Sustainability

Pakenham Living & Learning and Swinburne PrimeSCI! joined forces in 2021, with combined goals of diverting waste from landfill and so CAWRS (Community Alliance in Waste Reduction and Sustainability) was established.

Establishing an inter-municipal network of community compost hubs, repair cafes and coffee cup collection points across Melbourne’s eastern and southern suburbs to increase opportunities for community-supported resource recovery and waste reduction.

So many Community Hubs, Neighbour Houses and other Environmental and Sustainability Organisations are doing amazing community work around composting at community gardens, running repair cafes and providing education in waste reduction and recycling.

Pakenham Living Learning

Living & Learning Pakenham Inc. (LLP) aspires to be the preeminent provider of services enabling participation regardless of cultural, socio-economic status or educational background, empowering the marginalised and vulnerable in our community. We do this by providing high quality education, support, employability skills and community connection. The Pakenham Community Garden which was initially established in 2011 from a concrete slab to the successful Garden that it is today. The garden features over 20 wicking beds, mature fruit trees, perennial herb gardens, a community compost hub and a micro nursery which is dedicated to growing seedlings organically for local farms, schools and community groups.

Description:

Pakenham Living Learning and Swinburne have joined forces to developing an inter- municipal network of community compost hubs, repair cafes and coffee cup collection points across Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs. This is combined with education to help reduce waste, become better recyclers and instil a future repair café through community and school workshops, A series videos are in production in 10 different languages to inform people about correct recycling.

PrimeSCI! is a science education service provider based at Swinburne University of Technology and will bring an existing school education network in the Cardinia, Maroondah and Yarra Ranges municipalities and extensive knowledge and teaching experience in sustainability and waste reduction.
